This is one of those films that ended up flying under the radar. I found this film on the shelf in a store, and being fans of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, I was curious to watch it. What I got was one of the best alien films I’ve seen in a very long time.
The film is about a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station, that receive a sample of an alien life form from Mars to observe and experiment with. What they discover is a rapidly evolving creature that they assume may have caused an extinction on Mars. This threat now puts the scientists in danger, as well as all life on Earth. The film does kind of play to a haunted house format, but does it in a way that is unique to this film.
It feels very realistic, allowing the fear to grow in audiences naturally. The scariest thing about this situation is that it could be a very real scenario if we were to ever discover life in our universe. With great performances from all of the actors, we are also met with some of the best death scenes I’ve seen in a while. They’re not too graphic, but disturbing and shocking enough to get your blood pumping. What makes this such a great film is that you quickly realize that the actors care more about making this a fantastic movie, opposed to wanting to grab screen time. This is the passion I want to see from all great actors.
Life is a must see for all fans of Sci-Fi and Horror. It makes you believe that monsters are real and they’re somewhere out there in our universe.
